Men...

As I mentioned before, I've started cutting my own hair. At first it was kind of terrifying but now it's liberating and fun! Several bonues... 1. it's much cheaper. 2. I can figure out a way to get the exact cut I want without having to communicate it. 3. I can maintain it constantly without having to hustle back and forth to the salon so it always looks good.

We're not talking cutting your own bangs and crying in the shavings here. It's actually working out fantastically. I've also started cutting the hubs hair but he's less enthusiastic. As I was admiring my handiwork on this particular occasion I said I'm gonna get so good you're gonna recommend me to all your friends.... I don't think that came out quite right.

The hubs and I are looking for wedding hairdos. This is the fun part. And after months of living in cold climes and growing his hair out, he finally realized he's not losing it. Such exciting news for a thirty-something male I think.

As part of New Year's Resolution #3 I've decided to try perfecting (read: attempting) the wave...

Luckily, The Beauty Department has some helpful tips (read: lays it out completely)...

Thank you TBD, you make not looking like a hot mess possible for beginners like me (read: the utterly incompetent).

For the last eight days of the year I'll be counting down the top 5 posts in each category for 2013... because I don't have much else to say... basically. Kidding. It's actually because I plan to be drunk for the last eight days of the year. Kidding.

Click on the headings to see the full post. Happy New Year!

Guess who got a new redheaded model... Zara! Now it's twice the fun. I can go there to shop and to get the perfect color for my stylist. Cut my hair again last night and much to my dismay found more grays and general mousy brown-ness coming in at the roots. Grrr. I spent all of 10 minutes in the bathroom and faced the Spanish Inquisition from the hubs...

"What the hell took you so long? What're you having a little spa day?"

Apparently he hadn't heard the weeping over my lost youth. In other hair-related news, for years I have heard that to combat frizz you should dry your hair with a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel. I am not one to fall for marketing ploys but I was about to throw out an old t-shirt the other day and I thought hey what the hell. And let me tell you people... magic. So now my mousy brown grays are wonderfully frizz-free. Joy.

Not fair... all they have to do is look at eachother and they know instantly if a different haircut or color will look good on them. Not fair.

I'm getting older... yes I know but it is true. And as I enter "I Feel Bad About My Neck" territory I am reminded of sage advice about aging and style.

1. is avoid wearing black around the face. It ages you they said. It brings out your wrinkles they said. It doesn't do anything for the color of aging skin they said. Yea I don't care about any of that so shutup. Moving on...

2. is use the hair to frame the face and make it appear as round as possible, therefore appearing younger. This is why many a mature woman cuts her hair to the length of a baby elephant. Short of that, face framing layers are recommended. I've had those for years rendering me looking about 12 when I wear my hair down which I almost never do. Lately though, I've been making more of an effort and I'm starting to wear my hair down more, forgoing the ever present topknot from time to time. Alternatives to the topknot are required. So when the "if it's down, it's done" isn't possible, the low, messy pony may be a more interesting option.
