As I was flipping through my daily blog reading yesterday I came across a post of a woman in mostly black with a pair of skinny jeans and a plain baseball cap, hair down, pointy toed heels. Simple. Elegant. Sophisticated. All of these things.
But, in the comment section, which I never read on other people's blogs because some people have entirely too much time on their hands and use it to insult the work of others, someone said essentially, "I just don't get it! What is so special here. She looks just plain. I'm not impressed."
I wanted to jump up and down and scream at this person but there were other people in the room so that would be extra weird of me.
What is so special?! The single most difficult thing to do in any arena is to pair down an idea to its simplest form. To extract the miscellaneous and extraneous and boil an idea down to its essential thought nugget is incredibly time-consuming and intense.
Have you ever tried to write a mission statement for a business plan?
A cover letter?
A recommendation?
A text!
A blog post?!
Everyone knows Coco Chanel's famous saying that before she leaves the house she takes one thing off. There is some debate as to whether she actually said this but even if she didn't its an interesting idea mostly because its not referring to an item of clothing or an accessory. I believe one should remove at least 1 idea or concept before they leave the house.
Maybe your last idea while in your closet was to throw on some multi-layered chunky necklaces but your over-accessorized ass is wearing a watch, bracelet, and rings. Take the necklaces off eliminating the concept of layered jewelry.
Maybe you tucked your skinnies into your ankle boots then at the last minute half-tucked your buttondown, untuck your denim removing the concept/trend from your outfit thus getting closer to your essential idea.
Anyway, my point, if I have a point at all which I definitely don't, is that this woman...
looks amazing. She has paired her outfit down to its simplest form. Imagine the same woman with her hair down, wearing a chunky men's watch, layered bracelets, this season's YSL chunky rings on at least 2 fingers, and a metallic belt with a sequin shirt. Like any great artist, while getting dressed one must know when to stop getting dressed.
She's not even carrying a bag! Just a phone! I mean... perfection. Simplified.
If that made ANY sense let me know!
